Lanzarote

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the most northerly of the seven main Canary Islands and is located in an ideal position for you to make full use of the predominant NE trade winds. The landscape is volcanic and the coastline is very dramatic from the rugged NW coast to the more sheltered SE coast which has many sandy beaches located between volcanic rock cliffs that provide perfect places to anchor.

The Island of Lanzarote has many attractions for the visiting yachtsmen from its world class marinas with excellent facilities to its many isolated anchorages where you can find your own personal beach. Its close proximity to Graciosa, Alegranza, Lobos and Fuerteventura gives you access to many more marinas and anchorages.

The two marinas located on Lanzarote are Puerto Calero and Marina Rubicon and are considered to be the best in the Canary Islands. They both have excellent services for the yachtsman and tourist alike. The marinas both have chandleries and boatyards offering a complete range of services for sailors and wi-fi is available at your berth.

Arrieta – a popular anchorage to stop and have lunch en-route to Graciosa. The town has many waterfront restaurants and a very nice beach.

Puerto de Arrecife – the closest anchorage to the city centre. It is a large harbour but very shallow in places and should only be used for short stays. The surrounding area of this harbour is very attractive with an old fort and traditional stone walls.

Puerto de Naos – is a popular anchorage in the capital city of the Lanzarote. Very sheltered from winds and swell although it is not the most picturesque of places. A tripping line is recommended when anchoring. Good access to the city centre but no marina facilities for the visiting sailor.

Puerto de los Marmoles – located at the entrance to Naos there is a small beach where you can anchor, ideal for a lunch stop en-route to Graciosa.

Puerto Del Carmen – the port has recently been extended, but is not suitable for sailing yachts. It is possible to anchor outside the port in well settled conditions and take the dinghy ashore, however the best option if you plan to visit PDC is to berth in Puerto Calero from where you can catch the local water taxi.

Puerto Calero – first class picturesque marina with a wide selection of restaurants and shops. This is the home port of Atlantic Islands Sailing SL and therefore all mooring fees are included in your charter.

Playa Quemada – a small fishing village with a good anchorage providing access to the village beach and restaurants.

There are many isolated beaches between Playa Quemada and Papagayo which can only be accessed by boat and are excellent places to anchor in more settled conditions.

Papagayo – seven golden sandy beaches on the most southerly point of the island. The Papagayo area is part of a natural park and the only buildings here are two small café bars on the cliff tops. Very good anchorage for day stops or overnight stays.

Marina Rubicon – approximately 2 miles from Papagayo, Marina Rubicon is located in Playa Blanca and is another first class marina with many bars, restaurants and shops and is also ideally located for access to all that Playa Blanca has to offer. Visitors get complimentary use of the marinas own swimming pool.

Playa Blanca – a busy commercial port that is used by the two ferries which run between here and Fuerteventura. The port is mainly used by local boats but it is possible to anchor in the area outside the port, you must ensure that you keep clear of the ferries manoeuvring area. Good access to the town centre from here.

The west coast is the most exposed to the prevailing trade winds and there are no places to stop from La Graciosa to Playa Blanca, which is approximately 8 hrs sailing. The scenery along this coast is well worth the days sail if conditions allow, as there is very limited development and the volcanic nature of the island can be seen at its most dramatic.
